Its mission is to champion veterans working in the industry through three key functions: Education, Advocacy, and Mentorship. Please join us learn about this new and exciting program and how you can participate.

The evening will consist of a short presentation highlighting the program, as well as a networking reception where PGA members can interact with supporting companies, institutions, organizations, and young veterans who are transitioning into the filmmaking industry. Memorial Day Event

May 15, 2011

Military Veterans of Columbia University

Dear MilVets,

We cordially invite the Military Veterans of Columbia University to join in
the annual Memorial Day observance on May 30th from 10:30-11:45 am at the
venerated Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument on Riverside Drive at 89th Street.

The U.S. Marine Corps Band will play a prelude of patriotic music at 10:00 am
as well as perform during the program.

This year’s ceremony commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with
a musical tribute and a procession of  historic color guards led by the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums.

Noted Civil War historian Harold Holzer will give the annual memorial address.

Twenty wreaths will be laid at the landmark monument by veteran’s, civic and heritage organizations in a solemn ceremony including Sons of Union Veterans of
the Civil War, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, Old Guard of the City of New York, The Navy League, American Legion, the Grant Monument Association, Jewish War Veterans, Montford Point Marines, and others.

In conjunction with Fleet Week our Association will host eighty active duty Sailors
and Marines many of whom have served in combat areas or are soon to be deployed.

Governor Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone for the monument which pays homage to New Yorkers who gave their lives in the Civil War. The Memorial Day observance honors those who have served our nation in all wars.

As a WW II veteran and Columbia alumnus it is my hope that there will be a
substantial MilVet presence on May 30th.

Sincerely,

George Chall, President

Subcommittee Passes New Protections for Veterans

For more information, contact: Amy K. Mitchell, (202) 225-3527
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity favorably reported four bills to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. It is expected the legislation will go before the Committee as early as next Thursday, May 12, 2011.
“These bills are fiscally responsible, meet the needs of our veterans, and are supported by both sides of the aisle,” stated Rep. Stutzman (IN-03), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity. Each bill was passed unanimously.
Included in today’s markup was H.R. 1383, the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011, introduced by Rep. Jeff Miller (FL-01), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
“It is unfortunate we need to fix the changes made to the Post 9/11 GI Bill last year. We understand the financial burden placed on veterans seeking higher education and have done everything possible to minimize the impact. These new provisions ensure students will not have pay more for their education than promised,” Miller said.
The four pieces of legislation favorably reported to the full Committee are:
H.R. 1383, Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 (introduced by Rep. Miller of Florida, Rep. Bishop of New York, Rep. Runyan, and Rep. Stutzman)—as amended.
H.R. 1657, To amend Title 38, United States Code, to revise the enforcement penalties for misrepresentation of a business concern as a small business concern owned and controlled by veterans or as a small business concern owned and controlled by service-disabled veterans (introduced by Rep. Stutzman).
H.R. 802, To direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to establish a VetStar Award Program (introduced by Rep. Filner).
H.R. 1671, Andrew Connolly Veterans’ Housing Act (introduced by Rep. Braley).
