Military Veterans of Columbia University

Dear MilVets,

We cordially invite the Military Veterans of Columbia University to join in

the annual Memorial Day observance on May 30^th from 10:30-11:45 am at the

venerated Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument on Riverside Drive at 89^th Street.

The U.S. Marine Corps Band will play a prelude of patriotic music at 10:00 am

as well as perform during the program. 

This year’s ceremony commemorates the 150^th anniversary of the Civil War with

a musical tribute and a procession of  historic color guards led by the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums. 

Noted Civil War historian Harold Holzer will give the annual memorial address.

Twenty wreaths will be laid at the landmark monument by veteran’s, civic and heritage organizations in a solemn ceremony including Sons of Union Veterans of

the Civil War, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, Old Guard of the City of New York, The Navy League, American Legion, the Grant Monument Association, Jewish War Veterans, Montford Point Marines, and others.

In conjunction with Fleet Week our Association will host eighty active duty Sailors

and Marines many of whom have served in combat areas or are soon to be deployed.

Governor Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone for the monument which pays homage to New Yorkers who gave their lives in the Civil War. The Memorial Day observance honors those who have served our nation in all wars.

As a WW II veteran and Columbia alumnus it is my hope that there will be a

substantial MilVet presence on May 30^th.
