Admiral James G. Stavridis was nominated NATO Commander by President Obama in 2009, the first naval officer to a position previously held by army leaders, notably Dwight Eisenhower, Lauris Norstad, and Wesley Clark. The position now has global scope, with missions in Afghanistan, Haiti, Kosovo, and as discussed this week, potential intervention in Libya.
Stavridis formerly led U.S. Southern Command which has area of responsibility in Latin America and the Caribbean. Prior to that, Stavridis led the Enterprise group in the Arabian Gulf.
His most recent books are Partnership for the Americas (2010) and Destroyer Captain (2008), and his commentaries and op-eds have appeared in, among others, the Americas Quarterly and the International Herald Tribune. He is a 1976 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in international relations from Tufts University, where he won the Gullion Prize.
